So, the big news today is the proposed Jake Peavy trade.
The known pieces:
1. Jake Peavy would go to the White Sox.
2. Aaron Poreda (top pitching prospect) and Clayton Richards (current rotation member) would likely go the other way, along with 2 other players to be named (either propsects from a list or guys drafted in '08).
3. The 2 teams have agreed to the deal.
4. The deal solely hinges on Jake himself.
So, to me, it seems like the only holding the trade up is the lack of balls on Jake Peavy. Is he so afraid of pitching in the American League that he would keep himself in San Diego to rot in baseball hell?
It's being reported that Peavy is leaning towards declining the trade, which is fucking stupid. Unless he is waiting for a team that has a really high shot at the playoffs to swoop in and offer a package. I hope Peavy knows what he is doing, because, to me, he is coming off like a cunt if he doesn't accept the trade.
Next thing on todays newswire: San Diego did make a deal today, acquiring Tony Gwynn Jr. from the Brewers for current OF Jody Gerut. This is clearly a money trade, as Gerut makes just under $2M, while Gwynn makes about league minimum. It doesn;t hurt that Gwynn is also the son of Padre great Tony Gwynn. The little Gwynn should start in CF for a while, while Gerut makes an excellent 4th OF on a good team.
Also on todays rumour mill: The trade of Jack Wilson for Yuniesky Betencourt will not happen. I thought this deal was good for both teams. The Mariners get a slight upgrade for the rest of the season, and watch Wilson leave as a free agent, so they can spend more money on free agents. The Pirates shed money this year (but add on more total dollars) and get a short stop for the next couple years who is about as good as Wilson. It's not like the Pirates have a guy who can start at SS anyway. Oh well, it's not like it really matters. Both teams suck.
Well, that's it for now. Oh, and yeah, those are my mad MS paint skills on display.
